Details

The MEXT (Monbukagakusho) University Recommendation scholarship allows Japanese universities to directly recommend outstanding international students to the Ministry of Education for funding. Unlike the embassy track, you apply directly to a Japanese university that has a partnership or quota for this program.

What the Scholarship Covers

This is one of the most comprehensive scholarships available globally:

Full Tuition: All entrance examination, matriculation, and tuition fees are waived.
Monthly Stipend: Approximately 144,000 JPY per month (amount varies slightly by degree level and region).
Travel: Round-trip economy-class airfare between your home country and Japan.
Duration: Typically covers the full duration of your degree (Master's or PhD), including a 6-month Japanese language preparatory course if required.

Eligibility Criteria

Nationality: Must be a citizen of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan.
Academic Record: Candidates must have a high GPA (typically 2.30 out of 3.00 on the MEXT scale or equivalent).
Age: Generally must be under 35 years old at the time of application.
Admission: You must first be selected for admission by the host university in Japan before they can recommend you for the scholarship.
